REEDBED CLEARUP INITIATIVE Intrepid Action Group members, Jeremy Clarke (left) and Neil Montgomery braved the typical freezing, rain-swept weather of an English spring morning to return to their illustrious careers as professional litter pickers. The old skills soon returned and despite back twinges and the occasional wobbly knee, a mountain of discarded junk was removed from the reed bed and returned to the safe keeping of the council tip. Apart from the work of our dynamic duo, expert opinion advises against further radical action - the reed bed, it seems, is generally in good shape. A little more attention may be applied to cosmetic issues (where it will not interfere with wildlife) and a simple information board could be added at a latter date. The reed bed is frequently taken for granted but, when challenged, townsfolk are quick to defend its preservation. It's a valuable piece of open land, an inheritance from Woodbridge's past. At last October's public exhibition and consultation weekend, it was voted one of the top five projects out of the 12 issues that the group has identified or attention. The Action group says that it intends to husband the reed bed annually for wildlife, and preserve it for the benefit of the town too. Meanwhile it provides a valuable feature of Woodbridge station by affording clear views across to the other side of the river. This, the group believes, makes an enduring impression on visitors and residents alike both when they arrive by rail and, particularly when they depart southbound. |
