The Gas Works site - New planning application WAMRAG's publicity sub-committee has examined the (slightly) revised plans for the gas works site and it feels that there is considerable scope for improvement. It has to be up to individual members to view the plans and form their own judgements. If you feel you can suggest improvements we would urge you to write to the head of planning at SCDC and, importantly, send a copy of the letter to your own district councillor. The planning officer is: Mr R. S. Chamberlain Head, Development & Building Control Suffolk Coastal District Council Melton Hill Woodbridge IP12 1AU (Ref:- CO5/0583) Meanwhile you will find the contact details of your local councillor from the SCDC website. To get the ball rolling, here are some issues to consider: Scale: On the street elevation page, you'll see that the buildings are higher than the neighbouring ancient buildings. Perhaps more to the point, whereas the roofs of the neighbouring buildings slant away from the road, the proposed development has its gable ends rising vertically to full height. Consider whether you feel the design is overly complex and fussy. Positioning: Located as it is, close to the road, the tall buildings will have a tunnelling effect. Might it not be improved for everyone - future residents included - if the buildings were located towards the back of the site with some room for trees and shrubs between the buildings and the road? Compatibility: Does the design reflect the vicinity, and particularly the numerous 15th, 16th and 17th century Listed buildings, the majority of which have uncluttered, plain rendered elevations? Might there not be a weatherboarded 'building' included - as opposed to token zones of weatherboarding - resonant of the Tide Mill and the Granary? We hope to have the image of the street elevation plan on our web-site, www.wamrag.co.uk. Regards Publicity sub-committee, WAMRAG |
